2018年12月17日（月）18時30分より、グランドハイアット東京にてHEROs AWARD 2018を開催しました。HEROs AWARDは、その年のアスリートによる社会貢献活動を表彰する場です。HEROs AWARD 2018では、社会のため、地域のため、子供たちの未来のため、競技場の外でもスポーツマンシップを発揮している6つの活動が表彰されました。
HEROs AWARD 2018受賞者の中で最優秀賞にあたるHEROs of the yearは、北野華子氏が理事長を務める特定非営利活動法人Being ALIVE Japanによる「長期療養中のこどもにTEAMMATESとの『青春』を」に決定しました。
北野氏はHEROs of the yeat受賞にあたり、「一緒にこのように活動を取り組んで下さっているチームやアスリート、支えて下さっている医療関係者の方々、長期療養中のご家族にこの場を借りて、改めて感謝申し上げると共に、この活動をより広めていきたいです」と喜びを語りました。
同団体は、難病と闘う子どもたちがBリーグ所属クラブや大学野球部に入団し、練習に参加したり、ベンチ入りするなど、TEAM MATEとしてシーズンを過ごすという、世界でも初めての取り組みを行っています。
入院や治療生活をはじめ、身体的な理由によって限られてしまう青春。医療者や家族だけでは創りだせない子どもたちの青春をTEAMMATES（仲間）とともに創っていくことを目的としています。
TEAMMATESの存在は長く続く療養生活の支えだけではなく、こどもたちの人生の糧になること、競技を超えた広がりが期待できるほか、アスリートにとっても学びの場になる点が高く評価されました。

甲乙つけがたい素晴らしい活動ばかりで、審査委員会は白熱し、締め切り時間を超える激論の末のHEROs of the yearの決定となりました。
HEROs AWARDの司会を務めたのは日本財団HEROsアンバサダーの大林素子氏（バレーボール元日本代表）と、MCの鮎貝健氏。イブニングドレスやタキシードに身を包んだ華やかなアスリートたちが多数参加し、HEROs AWARD受賞者を祝福しました。
HEROs AWARDに続き、日本財団HEROsアンバサダーが主催したアスリートの交流会では、AWARDに参加した60名以上のアスリートが競技を超えて交流しました。東俊介氏（ハンドボール元日本代表）、根木慎志氏（車イスバスケット元日本代表）らが場を盛り上げました。
日本財団HEROsアンバサダーの中田英寿氏（サッカー元日本代表）は、「現役時代は他の競技興味があっても知る機会がなかった。社会貢献したいという思いがあっても何して良いか分からないという選手もいる。HEROs AWARDという場が、そうした選手たちの解決の場になっていくと思います」と、語りました。

HEROs of the year goes to NPO Being ALIVE Japan
HEROs AWARD ceremony is held annually to recognize outstanding social contribution activities being carried out by athletes, teams, leagues, and NGOs. In the final judging committee, which is held right before the HEROs AWARD ceremony, the HEROs of the year (grand prize) is elected among the winner of HEROs AWARD.
On December 17, 2018, the HEROs AWARD 2018 ceremony was held at the Grand Hyatt Tokyo. This year, the following six social contribution projects received HEROs AWARD.
Winner of HEROs AWARD 2018
・Akahoshi Norihiro (former professional baseball player): wheelchair donation
・Yuko Arimori (former women’s marathon runner): supporting self-reliance of socially disadvantaged people using sports and education.
・Seiji Iinuma (professional lifesaver): ATHLETE SAVE JAPAN basic lifesaving classes
・Makoto Hasebe (professional soccer player): supporting children all over the world as a UNICEF supporter
・Urawa Reds (professional soccer team): supporting children who have lost their parents with HIV or who infected with HIV in Thailand
As all the winner of HEROs AWARD are outstanding projects, the final judging committee had a heated debate deciding to which project the HEROs of the year should go. In the end, the committee decided on NPO Being ALIVE Japan.
Being ALIVE Japan is an NPO that provides sports-related activities for children under long-term medical treatment due to childhood cancer or other intractable disease. It aims to enable those children to fully enjoy their youth. One of their projects “TEAMMATES” provides opportunity for children to join professional basketball league or university baseball team and be a member of the team throughout the season. This project launched by Being ALIVE Japan is a world first.
The final judging committee saw “TEAMMATES” as a program whose benefits can be expected to go beyond the enjoyment of sports, but also self-reliance. At the same time, TEAMMATES provides a valuable learning experience to athletes. Expressing her joy at receiving the HEROs of the Year Award, Ms. Kitano said, “I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the teams and athletes for their efforts in working with us, the medical staff for their support, and the families during the children’s long-term care. We hope to further expand our activities.”
HEROs AWARD ceremony was filled by many top athletes in formal dresses, and HEROs Ambassador Motoko Obayashi (former professional volleyball player) and Ken Ayugai served as the moderators. HEROs Ambassador Hidetoshi Nakata (former professional soccer player) commented, “During my days as an athlete, even though I was interested in other sports, I never had an opportunity to get to know about them. There are many athletes who have a desire to contribute to society but do not know how. I believe the HEROs AWARD offers valuable opportunities to athletes.”.
