The WBA Middleweight World Champion Ryota Murata visited Yachimata Shonen-in school for juvenile boys

Ryota Murata, the WBA Middleweight title holder, is also a Nippon Foundation HEROs Ambassador. On September 19, Murata visited Yachimata Shonen-in, a juvenile training school, as a part of the “HEROs Rehabilitation Support Project”. This project aims to support the rehabilitation of boys in juvenile training schools using the power of sports.

Speaking frankly to around 60 boys, Murata recalled his own experiences when he was about the same age as they are. He told them how he tried to run away from boxing twice during high school, and about the defeat in his debut and final matches in both high school and university, as well as the defeat at his first world title challenge. At the same time, he explained that he was able to become a world champion, because he never quit boxing. He encouraged the boys by passionately telling them how important it was not to simply give up when they lost but to take on the challenge of never quitting.

To overcome defeat and to achieve victory, he told them that they must face their own weaknesses. “Although it is difficult to face your own weaknesses, you will be able to correct the course of your life by doing so.”.

Murata experienced losing the WBA world championship belt once but regained it in the rematch. “In boxing,” he explained, “it is possible to have a rematch, but a boxer’s career is not very long. On the other hand, life goes on, and we can have as many rematches as we choose to have.”. “Even if you lose at first, you can win in the rematch. To do that, you need perseverance, but I would like to see you experience that success.”.

During the question and answer session, many boys actively sought advice about their own personal concerns or questioned Murata about his own goals, and in return, Murata gave precise, earnest answers. In the sports interaction session, four boys had the opportunity to work the mitts with him.

We hope the boys will follow the road to rehabilitation through the power of sports and athletes. The Nippon Foundation will continue this project with HEROs Ambassadors and winner of the HEROs AWARD.
